Australia beat Poland 4-0 in world hockey

A 4-0 win over Poland cements Australia's place atop Pool A at the Hockey World League in Belgium, their third win from three games.

Strikes from Kieran and Blake Govers, Jake Whetton and Simon Orchard cemented Australia's place at the summit of Pool A at the Hockey World League with a 4-0 win over a determined Poland side.

The margin of victory on Friday might have been considerably greater for the World and Commonwealth champions had they not found Polish goalkeeper Maciej Pacanowski in inspired form.

The 22-year-old stopper denied Whetton, Chris Ciriello, Blake Govers and Eddie Ockenden with a string of saves.

"Our opportunities at goal were huge tonight and we just didn't get the return that we needed," Australia coach Graham Reid said.

"If we were sitting here with a few more goals I might have been a bit happier.

"I think the goalkeeper was a bit of an issue. We talked about that at half time. When a goalkeeper like that is playing well the worst thing you can do is to hit it at him, so you need to pass it round him."

It was Australia's third win in the event, after a 10-0 spanking of France and 6-1 result over pakistan, and the last pool match is against India on Sunday.

The Indians have won four of the sides' previous five encounters.

"That'll be major motivating factor - that we need to put our authority back on the game," Reid said.

"We'll play our game and not worry too much about all the things that India do."
