Australia cancels passports over security

Figures provided by ASIO show the number of Australian passports that have been cancelled since 2011 has risen from seven to 18.

Australians who get into trouble overseas would be forced to pay for consular help if the Abbott government's commission of audit gets its way.

The number of Australian passports that have been cancelled due to security concerns has almost trebled since 2011.

Figures from ASIO show seven passports were cancelled in 2011, compared to 18 last year, The Australian reports.

The figures revealed the number of passports cancelled between 2009-10 to 2011-12 had been steady at about seven a year.

The news comes as a ninth Australian, named as Ahmad Moussalli, apparently from Sydney, had been killed in Syria, with the Department of Foreign Affairs last night confirming it was aware of such reports.

But counter-terrorism sources told the paper they were unaware of Mr Moussalli prior to reports of his death.

It was suggested Australian radicals were becoming more involved in the Syrian conflict, but authorities were using interdiction, rather than seeking to prosecute fighters upon their return.
