Australia has formally designated the Nigerian armed group Boko Haram as a terrorist organisation.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced plans to blacklist Boko Haram in federal parliament last month.

The move now makes it illegal to fund, train with, recruit for or become a member of the group recently in the spotlight after members kidnapped 250 schoolgirls in April.

Samuel Makinda is a Professor of International Relations and Security Studies at Murdoch University in Western Australia.

He's told Santilla Chingaipe he's not surprised the group has been banned in Australia.
