Australia focus on one-day batting blues

While the Australian Test team is in Ashes whitewash form, the one-day side has poor form to overcome.

A spate of batting collapses is a major focus for the Australian one-day cricket team as the World Cup looms.

While the Test team is celebrating an Ashes whitewash, Steve Smith's one-day combination is no certainty as they head into the five-game series against England.

The English bundled Australia out of last year's Champions Trophy without a win, while India also dominated their home series last year 4-1.

Opener Aaron Finch said Australia needed more batting stability, especially through the middle of the innings.

"We were probably losing too many wickets through that middle period of the game (in the Champions Trophy) and not allowing us a big platform, to lead into that last 10-15 overs," he said.

"When we were playing in India a similar thing happened - we'd lose clumps of wickets."

The one-day team's key focus is preparing for the World Cup next year in England.

"Being still 18 months out, there's quite a lot of cricket to come before that World Cup, so I'm sure there'll be a little bit of experimentation with the key seven, eight or nine of the squad going forward," Finch said.

Australia have a solid one-day record at home, but Finch said their poor Champions Trophy campaign last year, also in England, had stung.

Two of their games were washed out and England won the other.

"There are a few scars there for the boys," he said.

The one-day series against England starts on Sunday at the MCG.
