Australia gets rare glimpse into world of Jean Paul Gaultier

The name Jean Paul Gaultier is synonymous with high fashion that dares to be different and now Australia is getting a glimpse inside the wonderful world of the French designer, who is exhibiting his greatest works at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.

The house of Jean Paul Gaultier has arrived in Australia and the flamboyant French fashion designer is loving every moment of it.

"First, in Melbourne, ze food! I love ze food!" he said.

But food wasn't on the mind of those who managed a sneak peek at his exhibition, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, they were instead feasting on the designer’s ground-breaking approach to fashion.

On display were a dazzling array of iconic pieces, from Madonna's famous cone-bra corset, to Nicole Kidman's 2002 Oscars gown.

The exhibition also had a particularly Australian flavour.

Exclusive to the National Gallery of Victoria were a range of gowns graced by Gaultier's Australian muses: Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Kylie Minogue and Australian supermodel Andreja Pejic, who made her first appearance back home following gender reassignment surgery.

The model attributed much of her success to the designer.

"[Jean Paul Gaultier] has given me an opportunity to build a name, to do something very unique," she said.

"When I was little, my biggest dream was to grow up and be a girl. He made me into a supermodel."

Jean Paul Gaultier is known for being daring and confronting and takes pride in seeing the beauty in what might be considered unconventional.

"With the dark hair or with the red hair...I always love...always the attractive people but who have a little difference," he said. "If it is to be the clone of someone else, I am not interested."

The designer himself couldn't name a favourite piece, but said the thrill of putting together his runway shows was a constant highlight.

The exhibition is open to the public at Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria from October 17th until February 8th, 2015.
