Australia in five finals in Barcelona

Australia has enjoyed a strong heats session to qualify for five finals on the last day of the world swimming championships in Barcelona.

Australia ensured a strong presence on the last night of finals at the world championships in Barcelona with a successful heats session on Sunday.

Australia's men's and women's 4x100m medley relay teams both qualified second fastest behind the US to position themselves as medal contenders in the finals.

Thomas Fraser-Holmes also booked a place in the 400m individual medley decider, ensuring Australia will compete in five finals in the last session of the eight-day meet.

Cate and Bronte Campbell will contest the 50m freestyle final after progressing through the semis on Saturday while teenager Jordan Harrison secured a spot for the 1500m freestyle.

Australia already has 10 medals - three gold and six silver - as it looks to rebound from a disappointing London Olympic campaign.

Fraser-Holmes was made to sweat on his qualification for the 400IM final before being confirmed as the seventh-fastest qualifier in four minutes and 14.52 seconds.

The 21-year-old eased off in the late stages but was pleased to have secured an outside lane for the final.

"I will just put the blinkers on and I will be right," Fraser-Holmes said.

A men's team of Ashley Delaney, Christian Sprenger, Kenneth To and Cameron McEvoy clocked 3:33.64, equal with Russia, as the USA claimed top spot in 3:32.72 for in the men's medley heats.

World 100m freestyle champion James Magnussen will come into the team for the final with the butterfly leg still up for grabs.

The women's team of Emily Seebohm, Samantha Marshall, Alicia Coutts and Emma McKeon were second in 3:58.73 behind the US (3:58.66).

Cate Campbell will back up from the 50m final to join the team.
