The Australian men have been eliminated from the Water Polo FINA World Cup after going down to the USA in the quarter-finals in a penalty shootout.

The Americans advanced to the semi-finals after downing the Sharks 11-9 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Australia fought back from 7-5 down at the end of the third quarter to tie the game at 7-7 at the completion of regular time.

The Sharks began the penalty shootout badly with Aaron Younger and captain Richard Campbell missing their attempts, while Americans Alex Bowen, Bret Bonnani and Luca Cupido made no mistake.

Australians Aidan Roach and Tylert Martin converted their attempts before American captain John Mann iced the tiebreaker with his shot.

Despite being eliminated from the main draw, Australia will take on the loser of the South Africa-Hungary semi-final in a minor playoff.
