Australia have posted 9-242 in the final one-day international against India, with a half-century to David Warner the highlight of the tourists' innings.

Sunday's fifth ODI is delicately poised after Australia set a defendable total on a Nagpur pitch which is offering some assistance to slower bowling.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel (3-38) did the damage for India.

He had Warner caught on the boundary on 53 before Peter Handscomb (13) top edged a sweep shot and Travis Head (42) was out bowled.

It was a steady innings from Warner, with five boundaries, but just as he looked to lift the run rate he was out caught on the long-on boundary.

Marcus Stoinis was given out lbw on 43 but successfully reviewed the decision, with replays showing he edged the ball onto his pad.

He added three more runs before being given out again, this time Jasprit Bumrah trapped him in front with a second review unable to save him.

Stoinis and Head led a revival after Australia lost 3-18 in less than five overs.

They put on 87 for the fifth wicket, lifting Australia past 200 after slumping to 4-118 midway through the innings.

Matthew Wade smashed a six on his way to 20 off 18 balls, but holed out to Indian paceman Jasprit Bumrah on the final ball of the penultimate over.

James Faulkner was run out on the second last ball on 12, while Nathan Coulter-Nile was bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar on the final delivery.

Bumrah (2-51) was superb at the death, making the 45th over a wicket maiden with the crucial scalp of Stoinis.

Earlier, skipper Steve Smith, who won the toss and chose to bat first, was out lbw to part-timer Kedar Yadav for 16 after attempting to sweep across the line.

Aaron Finch and Warner put on 66 for the first wicket.

Finch spooned a catch to mid-off on 32, giving Hardik Pandya the breakthrough.
