Australia to face Serbia in Fed Cup tie

Australia must beat Serbia away to stay in World Group II of the Fed Cup following the loss to the Ukraine.

Australia will face Serbia for the first time in Fed Cup history, needing to beat their European opponents to stay in World Group II.

Having lost the World Group II first-round tie to Ukraine earlier this month, Australia face a play-off tie against the Serbs with a win guaranteeing a spot in the eight-nation second tier.

A loss will see the green-and-gold relegated to the Asia/Oceania Zone I tier of the competition, where they haven't been since 2009.

Australia will travel to Serbia for the tie on April 22-23, with a venue and surface yet to be named.

Top-ranked Samantha Stosur skipped the Ukraine tie to focus on her WTA career but there is no word yet whether she will be available for the Serbian clash.

With Ana Ivanovic retired and Jelena Jankovic no certainty, having featured in just one Fed Cup tie since 2012, Australia will fancy their chances against what could be a depleted Serbian line-up.
