Australia v India day four snapshot

A snapshot of what happened on Saturday at the MCG as India closed on a 2-1 series lead against Australia.

AUSTRALIA V INDIA THIRD TEST SNAPSHOT

STATE OF PLAY: India first innings 7 (dec)-443, Australia first innings 151, India second innings 8 (dec)-106, Australia second innings 8-258, needing 141 runs to win.

MEN OF THE DAY: Jasprit Bumrah's two scalps made him only the third Indian to take eight wickets in an Australian Test. Pat Cummins took a career-best 6-27 and then embarrassed his teammates higher up the batting order with a top score of 61 - and counting. It's Cummins' highest Test score.

KEY MOMENT: For Australia to have any chance of a miracle result, they needed a solid opening partnership. Instead, Aaron Finch played a terrible shot outside off stump - like he was giving slips catching practice - and was out for three.

STAT OF THE DAY: Travis Head is the only batsman in Australia's top seven averaging more than 30 in the series.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "Have you heard of a temporary captain ever?" The day after Tim Paine sledged Indian Rishabh Pant, the Indian wicketkeeper brutally returned the favour.
