AUSTRALIA V INDIA FIRST TEST SNAPSHOT:

STATE OF PLAY: India win by 31 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the four-Test series. Australia, chasing 323 for victory, were bowled out for 291

MAN OF THE DAY: Virat Kohli. He made middling contributions with the bat - scores of three and 34 - but becomes the first Indian to captain Test wins in Australia, England and South Africa. He also oversees India's only win in a first Test of a series in Australia

KEY MOMENT: Shaun Marsh's dismissal. The left-hander couldn't save the Test but saved his spot in the Test team with a top score of 60. Marsh soaked up 166 deliveries before feathering an edge to the wicketkeeper from Jasprit Bumrah's bowling. As Marsh departed, so did Australia's slim hopes of avoiding defeat, although the wagging tail - led by Nathan Lyon's 38 not out - gave the tourists some anxious moments

MAN OF THE MATCH: India's first drop Cheteshwar Pujara produced two gems. He scored a superb 123 in the first innings, the only century of the match, and followed by top-scoring with a vital 71 in the second innings

STAT OF THE DAY: 1-0. The only stat that really matters after the series opener

QUOTES OF THE DAY: "We had a lot of opportunities to win this game and just didn't take them." Australian captain Tim Paine

"I wouldn't say I was cool as ice." Indian captain Kohli on the tighter-than-expected finish

WHAT'S NEXT: The second Test in Perth starts on Friday. Allrounder Mitch Marsh will rejoin the Australian squad while India's injured opener Prithvi Shaw is unlikely to recover from his ankle injury in time.
