Australia was ranked the world's 17th largest economy in 2011, but cast ahead 35 years and it could be a very different picture.

A new report by accountancy firm Price Waterhouse Coopers says Australia could fall out of the world's 20 largest economies by 2050, as the mining boom winds down.

According to the report, Australia will slip to 18th position after being outranked by Saudi Arabia in 2030, and then lose its position in the top 20 two decades later to the likes of Vietnam and Nigeria.

Jeremy Thorpe is PWC's consulting economics and policy leader.

He began by telling Darren Mara that Australia could be somewhat powerless in the face of a changing global economic landscape.
