Ms Brandsen has a lung disease and has just weeks to live. The wedding was her dying wish, the ABC reports.

The couple exchanged vows in a glade surrounded by ferns near a spring, with Maori warriors arriving by canoe.

Unable to legally marry in Australia, they travelled to New Zealand with the help of money raised on a crowdfunding website.

Flanked by a wedding planner and Rotorua drag diva Miss Ma Ma Laid as Matron of Honour, the tearful pair exchanged gold wedding rings and spoke of love, support, commitment and belonging, GayNZ.com reported.

"Stick that up you Tony Abbott," said a grinning Ms Bransden as the couple held their marriage certificate up, GayNZ.com reported.
