Authorities have confirmed an Australian man has been found dead in India.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to man's family, but could not comment further due to privacy issues.

News Corp named the man as 59-year-old Michael James O'Toole from Melbourne, adding that an autopsy hopes to reveal more about the cause of his death.
