Australian men beat Hungary in water polo

Australia's men's water polo players finish fifth in the World League Super Final with an historic 9-6 win over Hungary.

The Aussie Sharks have beaten water polo's strongmen Hungary for the first time in 19 years, recording a 9-6 win for fifth place at the FINA World League Super Final in Italy.

Although frustrated by their inconsistent early tournament form, Australia had conceded just 39 goals in their first five games, equal to Hungary as the best in the tournament to that point.

The play-off result was the first win for Australia over Hungary since 1996 and the first at a FINA event since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

The Sharks finished their current campaign one place lower than the fourth-placed effort at the corresponding event in 2014.

Their next assignment is next month's FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
