Three months after the Sri Lankan government designated the Australian Tamil Congress a terrorist organisation, members say they're worried about contacting family and associates at home.

The Congress was one of 16 groups, including the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam or Tamil Tigers, to be banned by the Sri Lankan government in April.

Describing itself as a civil society organisation, the Congress has been active in advocating for the interests of Tamil Australians.

It's also voiced support for a United Nations investigation into war crimes allegations against the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers before the end of the civil war in 2009.

Spokesman Doctor Raga Ragavan told Kristina Kukolja members of the Congress in Australia are being more careful in the way they go about contacting people in Sri Lanka.
