The English teacher, known as David Robert Ancel Green, had his home raided by police, who discovered he had turned his attic into a greenhouse for potted cannabis.
Green told police he had purchased the cannabis seeds from the Netherlands and Shanghai and had grown them to supply himself with the drug.
It is illegal to grow and possess marijuana in China.
Green was detained for 13 days before being repatriated.
