Australia has been asked to send a specialist medical team to Nauru to operate on an 11-year-old refugee boy with a broken arm.

Australian doctors familiar with the case had feared the Iranian boy could be left disabled if he didn't receive urgent surgery.

They say the Australian Immigration department ignored initial calls for medical assistance from the International Health and Medical Services and Nauru doctors.

Doctors for Refugees co-founder, Dr Barri Phatarford has told Zara Zaher, the Australian government should have responded much sooner.
