Australian tourist dies after NZ fall

A 23-year-old Australian tourist has died in hospital after suffering critical head injuries falling onto rocks in New Zealand.

An Australian tourist who fell five metres onto rocks at a New Zealand swimming hole has died in hospital.

Queensland woman Ashleigh Jade Dargusch, 23, died from her head injuries in Waikato Hospital on Saturday.

On December 27, Ms Dargusch and four friends had walked to a swimming hole in the Kauaeranga Valley on the Coromandel Peninsula.

She had been watching two of them jumping into the water when she lost her footing and fell about five metres onto a large slate of rock, says Senior Sergeant Rupert Friend.

She was flown by helicopter to Waikato Hospital but died eight days later.

"I would like to extend the New Zealand Police's sympathies to her family and friends for their loss," Sen Sgt Friend said.

Ms Dargusch's social media accounts show she had been holidaying around Auckland and the Coromandel since December 21.
