Australian water polo team down USA

The Australian water polo team have bounced back from a loss in their opening game in Dubai to beat the USA 8-4 after an improved defensive effort.

Australia's water polo team closed down the USA, beating them 8-4 at the FINA World League Super Final in Dubai.

The Aussie Sharks improved their defensive effort against the USA after losing to Hungary in their opening game of the tournament.

Captain Richie Campbell scored three goals, while London Olympian Aidan Roach snatched two.

Other scorers included George Ford, fellow London Olympian Johnno Cotterill and young Victorian Lachlan Edwards.

The Sharks took the early advantage in the game to have a slender 2-1 lead at the first break.

But that gap evaporated as the USA levelled the game to 3-3 by half-time.

The Sharks opened up a three goal buffer to lead 6-3 at the final exchange.

They then stamped their authority in the final term, locking out the USA attack to seal their first win for the tournament.

"From good defence we had a lot of opportunities for counter attack, and off the back of that we scored three goals," Sharks coach Elvis Fatovic said.

The Sharks next game will be against Canada at 11.10pm (AEST) on Wednesday.
