Papau New Guinea has banned Australians from travelling to the island of Bougainville.

It follows indications in last week's budget that Australia plans to establish a diplomatic mission in Bougainville's capital, Buka.

PNG's Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, says the decision was made without any consultation.

But the Australian government insists it discussed proposals to open the mission with Papua New Guinea's government last year.

Political researcher on Pacific Affairs at the University of Melbourne, Jonathan Schultz, told Adeshola Ore about the reason for PNG's restriction on Australian travellers.
