Australians scoop 13 taekwondo medals

Australia have won a total of 13 medals at the Pacific Games in Port Moresby and have picked up valuable world ranking point in the lead-up to Rio.

Australian taekwondo star Safwan Khalil has joined his wife and fellow London 2012 Olympian Carmen Marton in winning a gold medal at the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea, as the country landed a total 13 medals.

The men's team on Friday added six medals to the seven the women claimed the day before, with Khalil, Tom Auger, Tom Afonczenko, Jack Marton and Hayder Shkara all taking gold in their respective divisions and Daniel Safstrom finishing with silver.

The tournament is an important step towards Olympic qualification, with each division win worth 40 world ranking points.

Khalil was relieved to emerge victorious from his gold medal match with Tahiti's Teddy Teng in the 58kg category, taking a slow and methodical approach on his way to a comprehensive 13-0 win.

"The game plan I came up with Ali (head coach and brother Ali Khalil) was to slow my pace down," he said afterwards.

"Slow footwork with really good kicking technique."

Marton joined his older sisters Carmen and Caroline on the podium, defeating Tahiti's Peter Babke for gold in the 74kg division.

On Thursday Australia's female competitors won four gold and three silver medals.
