A senior federal government minister has urged the Australian public not to discriminate against the Muslim community in the wake of the Sydney siege.

Minister for Social Services Kevin Andrews' comments come after a black banner with white Arabic writing was shown at a window of the Lindt cafe where the hostage drama unfolded.

Mr Andrews has told Manpreet Singh, he believes it is critical not to allow the actions of one individual to tarnish the Muslim community as a whole.
