Malcolm Fraser has died at the age of 84. He served as prime minister from November 1975 to March 1983.

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MALCOLM FRASER

* Australia's 22nd prime minister, served from November 1975 to March 1983, after being appointed caretaker leader following dismissal of the Whitlam government on November 11, 1975.

* Born May 21, 1930, in Toorak, Victoria. Died March 20, 2014, aged 84.

* Educated at Melbourne Grammar and Oxford University.

* Primary producer before entering parliament in 1955, aged 25.

* Wife: Tamie

* Children: Mark, Angela, Hugh, Phoebe

* Political legacy: shaped Australian relations with east and southeast Asia; indigenous land rights, human rights; anti-whaling; accepted fleeing Vietnamese refugees.

* Established Care Australia, SBS and Australian Federal Police.

* Served as special envoy to Yugoslavia in 1999.
