Over three days, half a million Australian school students will pit their skills against the best from around the world.
Tim Power, chief executive of 3P Learning, said the sheer numbers of students competing in the World Education Games is staggering.
"This year there's over 6 million students registered over 200 countries and territories," he said.
The latest studies shows that when it comes to mathematics, mainland China is at the top of the international table.
Not far behind are several other Asian countries including Singapore, Korea and Japan. Australia is ranked 19th.
Organisers hope the mathletics technology will generate interest and help improve student results.
"It is very much taking the fun of sport and gaming but applying it to a maths competition," said Sarah Vaughan, director of developer experience at Microsoft Australia.
Participants are also encouraged to fundraise for UNICEF's school-in-a-box, an education kit for kids whose learning has been disrupted.
"Through our education we can help others," said 15-year-old Syeda Mariam Kashif. "We're gonna hold a fundraiser so all the proceeds from that are going to go to UNICEF."
