Australia's Wade Ormsby, ranked no.436 in the world, has won a maiden US Open berth after holding his nerve in a qualifying play-off round.

Ormsby, from Adelaide, earned one of 15 spots awarded at a 36-hole sectional qualifier at Walton Health in England.

The 37-year-old was forced into a seven-man play-off after missing the top-11 to automatically qualify.

But his bogey on the second extra hole - the par-3 17th - saw him win the final spot before qualification cut-off.

Ormsby has never played in a major and his only US PGA tour appearance was in 2014. He has spent much of his time on the Asian and European tours.

He will join fellow Australians Jason Day, Adam Scott and Marc Leishman at the US Open, along with top-two players Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy.

The top three to qualify on Monday were English winner Aaron Rai, runner-up Li Haotong of China, and France's Alexander Levy and Scotland's Richie Ramsay, who took a share of third.

Still to be played is the US qualifier on June 5 at 10 sites across America.

The rest of the 156-man field will be decided by those not already eligible to get into the top 60 in the world ranking published June 11, the Sunday before the US Open.
