Rich private schools could have their federal government funding curtailed under changes reportedly being considered by the Turnbull government.

Fairfax Media says those schools won't have funds cut in real terms, but the government is examining how to reduce the generous annual funding increases locked into legislation by the Gillard government.

The schools fundings proposals from Education Minister Simon Birmingham have been discussed in Cabinet, but a final position is yet to be reached, Fairfax said.
