Large donations from high-profile figures including James Packer and Andrew Forrest have shone a light on Australia’s philanthropic culture. So who has made the biggest donations? And to which organisations? SBS has compiled a list of the top 10 philanthropic gifts in Australia, by dollar amount, with all information courtesy of Philanthropy Australia.

  1. $65 million from Andrew and Nicola Forrest to University of Western Australia - October 2013

  1. $60 million from James Packer: 50 per cent to western Sydney arts, $15m to Sydney Theatre Company, $10 million to Art Gallery of NSW, $5 million to other Arts organisations - November 2013

  1. $50.1 million from Clive Berghofer to Queensland Institute of Medical Research - August 2013

  1. $50 million from Graham Tuckwell to Australian National University  - February 2013

  1. US Philanthropist Chuck Feeney (of an estimated $500 million he has given collectively in gifts across Australian based NFPs):

    a)    $102 million announced in 2009 to three medical research organisations, including:

    b)    $50 million to the Transatlantic Research Institute at the Princess Alexandra Hospital

    c)    $27.5 million to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research at the Royal Brisbane

    d)    $25 million to Queensland's Hub for Sustainable and Secure Infrastructure

6.  $20 million from John Grill to University of Sydney - October 2012

7.  $15 million from Simon Mordant AM and Catriona Mordant to Museum of Contemporary Art Australia – 2010

8.  $10 million from David and Barbara Thomas to the Nature Conservancy Australia – 2007

9.  $5 million from Miss Betty Amsden OAM to Arts Centre Melbourne – 2009

10. $5 million from Steve Killelea to Institute for Economics and Peace – 2007
