Australian carriage driver Boyd Exell has upset the top-ranked Chester Weber at the World Equestrian Games in France to retain his world title.

Exell outclassed the talented field to finish atop the podium with a cumulative score of 125.83, just edging out the USA's Weber (128.60) while the Netherlands' Theo Timmerman (133.88) placed third.

The Australian had placed second in the dressage component of competition, third in the marathon and fourth in the final obstacle phase - but combined, he came out with gold around his neck.

"It's a huge relief. The whole weekend we had a good show but not a perfect show," he said.

"The dressage was quite good but not fantastic, we made one big mistake on the the marathon.

"The cones went very well but sometimes I wondered if I was going to go through the cones in the middle."
