Incredible photos have emerged documenting the moment a baby was rescued from the rubble of a building, nearly a day after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal and killed nearly 5,000 people.

The baby boy Sonit Awal was trapped for nearly 22 hours after the earthquake struck, Nepalese newspaper Kathmandu Today reported.

The newspaper published images of the dust-covered infant the moment he was spotted by the Nepalese army and pulled to safety.

"After the army left, he had heard his son cry, so the hope was still there. The rescue team came back in the morning and rescued the baby at 10 am," the paper wrote. Baby Sonit was later taken to Bhaktapur Hospital.

The Nepalese government has been struggling to fully assess the devastation wrought by Saturday's 7.8 magnitude quake.

An official from Nepal's home ministry said the number of confirmed deaths had risen to 5,238 by Wednesday night. Almost 10,350 were injured in Nepal, and more than 80 were also killed in India and Tibet.
