Melbourne Zoo is celebrating its first gorilla baby in 15 years.

Gorilla mum Kimya delivered her firstborn, about 6pm on Saturday night.

It's not known whether the bundle of joy is a boy or a girl, because keepers haven't been able to get a good look just yet.

The much anticipated arrival is the zoo's first gorilla baby since 2000, bringing the total number of gorillas born at the zoo to seven.

The baby, the result of an endangered species breeding program for western lowland gorillas, is yet to be named.
