Bad light has forced a playoff at the US PGA Tour event in Georgia to be put on hold until Tuesday (AEDT).

Canada's Mackenzie Hughes faced another anxious overnight wait after fading light halted a play-off for the US PGA Tour's RSM Classic title at Sea Island, Georgia.

Bidding to become the first rookie to complete a wire-to-wire victory on the tour in 20 years, Hughes was deadlocked with American Blayne Barber, Colombia's Camilo Villegas and Sweden's Henrik Norlander after two holes of sudden-death when officials called a halt.

The odd man odd was American Billy Horschel, the highest-ranked player in what began as a five-man play-off. He was eliminated when he missed a two-foot par putt at the first extra hole.

Earlier Norlander had the lowest final round score of the group, shooting five-under 65 and he was joined by Barber (66), Villegas (68), Horschel (68) and overnight leader Hughes (69) in a tie at 17-under 265.

Cameron Percy was the leading Australian, tied 21st on 11 under after a 68 while Brett Drewitt tied for 67th with a 74.

Hughes, who has never previously had a top-10 finish on the PGA Tour, missed birdie chances on the 15th and 16th holes of his final round and eventually had to make a five footer on the last to force his way into the play-off.

He led since opening with a blistering 61 first round.

Of the four remaining players, only Villegas has won on the PGA Tour before, but the 34-year-old is without a full playing status after a disappointing 2016 campaign which saw him finish 152nd in the FedEx Cup, despite skipping the Olympics to focus on retaining his card.

He made a late charge with a tap-in birdie on the 16th and 18 footer on the 17th for a round of 68.
