Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has blamed the South Australian blackout on "bad management" as the Turnbull government pushes for a single national renewable energy target.

Mr Joyce has rejected claims the state-wide blackout was caused by severe storms, insisting it would not have occurred if the state had had a better source of baseload power.

"Yes, you would've had blackouts in South Australia but you wouldn't have them across the state," he told Sky News on Thursday.
