Bail changed for WA man on sex charges

A magistrate has removed the curfew from the bail conditions for a WA counsellor facing child sex abuse charges because police have been waking the man up.

A West Australian counsellor facing charges of child sex abuse against 12 boys has had his bail conditions varied because police have been waking him up at night to check he is abiding by his curfew.

Allan Keith Huggins has been charged with more than 60 offences of sexual abuse against boys aged between 11 and 17, dating back more than 20 years.

Among the offences are aggravated sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault and sexual penetration of a juvenile male.

The charges stem from when Huggins was an education officer for the Warminda program, which helped troubled boys in the 1990s, and as a counselling psychotherapist at the Perth Adolescent Service.

Huggins' bail conditions were varied in Perth Magistrates Court on Friday to remove the 6pm to 8pm curfew because his lawyer argued that police were waking Huggins up several times at night to check on him.

His other bail conditions include an order to stay away from alleged victims, to not leave the state and report daily to police.

Huggins will appear in Perth District Court for a trial mention on April 17.

Huggins was allowed in October to resume counselling men on the proviso he had no unsupervised contact with anyone aged under 21.

A national hotline - 1800 552 203 - has been established to encourage alleged victims to come forward.
