Bail for man charged over NSW depot death

A NSW truck driver accused of bashing a forklift driver who later died in hospital has been granted bail following a court appearance.

A truck driver charged over an alleged assault that caused the death of a forklift operator has been granted conditional bail in NSW.

A fight between Geoffrey Michael Strong, 44, and the 45-year-old man allegedly broke out at Crawfords Freightlines in the Newcastle suburb of Sandgate on Tuesday.

Police allege the fight was prompted by a minor collision between a truck and a forklift.

The forklift operator was found unconscious by emergency services at the industrial site after being punched several times.

He was pronounced dead at John Hunter Hospital a short time later.

Strong was arrested at the scene and successfully applied for conditional bail at the Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday.

He has been ordered to report to police daily and must stay away from his alleged victim's family and the scene of the alleged assault, among other conditions.

He's due back at the same court on September 30.

It's the second death at the work site in a month, with investigations continuing into the July fatality.

"We are all saddened by the death of one of our valued employees at our premises," Crawfords Freightlines managing director Peter Crawford said in a statement.

"We express our deepest sympathies to the man's family and friends during this difficult time."
