Bailey risks ODI ban after MCG go-slow

George Bailey could be given a one-game ban after Australia needed an extra 26 minutes to complete their 50 overs in the MCG clash with India.

George Bailey is expected to be served with a one-game suspension due to Australia's slow over-rate on Sunday.

Bailey was fined 40 per cent of his match fee after Australia fell short of their over-rate target in a one-day international (ODI) against South Africa in Perth last November.

International Cricket Council regulations stipulate Bailey will cop a one-match ban if he is responsible for another over-rate offence before November.

It means the 32-year-old could miss Friday's clash with England at his home ground in Hobart.

If that transpires, Steve Smith would likely lead Australia's one-day side for the first time in his burgeoning career.

India's innings was slated to end at 5.50pm AEDT on Sunday, but Australia needed an additional 26 minutes to complete their 50 overs.

The hosts' cause wasn't helped by the 15 wides they bowled, while the absence of a frontline spinner was also telling.

Xavier Doherty was left out of the XI, with offspinner Glenn Maxwell sending down two overs.

Match referee Andy Pycroft can take into account mitigating circumstances, but there was no extended break for injury treatment or the like.

There is an upside to a potential suspension, given Bailey's slate would be wiped clean before the World Cup.
