Baird promises $500m hospital revamp

The "iconic" Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney will undergo a $500 million redevelopment within the next term of a re-elected Baird government.

A re-elected Baird government would splash half a billion dollars on redeveloping Sydney's Prince of Wales Hospital.

Premier Mike Baird met with doctors at the hospital on Monday before announcing plans for its first major redevelopment in 20 years.

Construction would begin within his government's next term, he said.

"Prince of Wales Hospital is an icon, and under us, it'll be redeveloped in a way that will transform it to deliver health services going forward," Mr Baird said.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner said the "badly-needed" redevelopment of the hospital's emergency department would be among the top priorities.

But there would also be new operating theatres, expanded rehabilitation and ambulatory care facilities, and a dedicated mental health precinct.

"It's clear that these facilities need to be brought into modern practice.

"Doctors and nurses do a marvellous job, but they can't do it as well as they might if they had new facilities," Ms Skinner said.

The Baird government has already promised a suite of hospital upgrades around the state, but this would be among the biggest and quickest to start construction.

Ms Skinner said this upgrade would not rely on the government's plan to lease NSW electricity networks.
