Gorillas, lions, giraffes and orangutans are among the Taronga Zoo residents who will get new enclosures under a re-elected Baird government.

Mr Baird on Saturday announced a $115 million upgrade for Sydney's Taronga site, NSW's most popular tourist attraction.

The Baird government will throw $57.4 million at the project, with the rest being funded by the Taronga foundation.

Speaking at the zoo on Saturday, Mr Baird said the money is locked in and is not contingent on the privatisation of the state's electricity poles and wires.

He said Labor could not march the promise because it had already earmarked the money for other areas if elected.

"This major investment will revitalise and enhance the Zoo's exhibits to further improve the experience for visitors," he said.

Among the upgrades will be a revamped section for endangered Australian wildlife and an African savanna with new spaces for lions, giraffes, zebras and meerkats.

There will also be upgrades to the gorilla, orangutan and elephant enclosures.

The Baird government on Saturday also pledged $25 million towards a $50 million upgrade at Taronga Western Plains zoo at Dubbo, including an African lion savanna.
