The NSW government says it will recruit 310 extra police if it wins the March 28 election.

Premier Mike Baird says the commitment includes 250 officers to be trained as specialist police to work in areas such as counter terrorism, the child abuse squad, domestic violence and organised crime.

"This package delivers more specialist police investigators to target the most serious offences and technology to make police work safer and quicker - meaning more time on the street combating crime," Mr Baird told reporters in western Sydney on Thursday.

The scheme includes 50 extra detectives for counter-terrorism and special tactical command, 50 extra investigators for the child abuse squad and 70 extra police for the firearms and organised crime squad.

The government will also create Australia's first real-time intelligence response centre to target public shootings, with 20 police and five analysts.

The cyber crime and fraud squad will get 30 more specialist police, and 24 domestic violence specialist officers will be added to the force.

"We want to ensure our streets are safe and to do that we need resources, both in terms of police numbers and equipment," Mr Baird said.

The government will also spend $100 million equipping NSW Police with new technology such as body cameras, mobile fingerprint scanners, tablet computers and new drug-testing technology.

"Today's announcement will enable police to target all crime, from small-scale right through to the most serious," Police Minister Stuart Ayres said.

In addition, the government will spend $17.1 million over four years to improve services to police and to support injured officers returning to work and former officers and their families.
