The 2002 Bali bombing which killed 88 Australians was a last-minute decision by terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah, new WikiLeaks documents reveal.
SkyNews reported that a document on the whistleblower website says the terrorist group originally planned to attack Caltex and Exxon/Mobil operations in the Malacca Straits or a goldmine.
Instead, the group struck a Kuta nightculb, killing a total of 202 people on the touristy island of Bali.
Kuta provided an easier option than the original targets, which were too difficult to reach according to the WikiLeaks document.
Despite this, terrorist mastermind group al-Qaeda still deemed the operation a success, the document says.
