The 14-year-old from Morisset Park, near NSW's Central Coast, was released by Indonesian authorities over the weekend and his lawyer Muhammad Rifan told reporters he was flying back to Sydney on a Virgin Australia flight.

Network Seven reported he was due to land about 10.15am (AEDT).

Television footage showed the boy at an airport in Indonesia wearing a balaclava designed to disguise his identity.

It is understood he left Indonesia about 1am local time.

The boy, who has closely guarded his identity throughout the ordeal, admitted to carrying 3.6 grams of marijuana when he was arrested on October 4 in the tourist area of Kuta, where he was on holiday with his parents.

A district court on November 25 handed the teenager a two-month jail sentence for marijuana possession, deducting the eight weeks he had already spent in detention.

The boy had been held at an immigration detention centre in Jimbaran, but made a brief stop at Kerobokan prison on Sunday to get his fingerprints taken and paperwork finalised before he was handed to immigration authorities at Denpasar airport for deportation.
