Bali king hit victim out of intensive care

Matt Scarff, the surfing teacher flown back to Australia in an induced coma after being king hit in Bali, is slowly recovering in a Perth hospital.

An Australian surfing teacher who suffered major head injuries when he was king hit in Bali is out of intensive care in a Perth hospital.

Matt Scarff, 41, was allegedly punched by a stranger outside the Townhouse Club in Seminyak on November 15 after going to the aid of a woman.

After two operations, he awoke from an induced coma a week ago and smiled, winked and nodded at his family.

They say Mr Scarff has been moved out of the intensive care unit at Royal Perth Hospital and into a high dependency ward.

"The last couple of days have been positive ones," they wrote on a Facebook page, which was set up to raise money for Mr Scarff's return trip to Australia because he didn't have insurance.

"He is getting daily physio and they have been sitting him up in a chair for a few hours during the day."

Mr Scarff is unable to talk because of a tube that is helping him to breathe.

But he has been communicating by mouthing words and writing notes.

His family has praised hospital staff and say the nurses seem pleased with his progress.

Mr Scarff runs Bali Learn To Surf, a surf school that mainly teaches southeast Asians, including orphans, and includes surf trips to Java.
