Bali Nine pair Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan were calm and dignified when told they had 72 hours until their execution, one of their lawyers says.

Julian McMahon was with the Australian men, who were "magnificent" when Indonesian officials told them they would be executed, something only Indonesia's president or attorney-general can stop.

"We're looking at a Wednesday morning execution for nine people, including my clients," Mr McMahon told 3AW radio.
