Bali police say there are "weird" elements in the death of a Perth man whose bloodied body was discovered inside a rented villa on the popular tourist island.

His family meanwhile, have requested privacy, saying they are "greatly saddened" by the event.

Stephen Richardson's bloodied body was discovered lying on his bed at his rented villa in Sanur on Monday afternoon.

His friend Garry Croker - who had become concerned about his safety due to several unsuccessful attempts to contact him - scaled Mr Richardson's fence and found him.

Police said Mr Croker noticed a splatter of blood near the porch and could see the 63-year-old lying naked on the bed.

He called out to him but received no response.

When police arrived they said the house was locked and there was broken glass from a cabinet inside the villa.

Police were at the rented villa on Tuesday, scouring the scene as they continued to investigate the case.

They said they have spoken with 12 people about the matter and are awaiting forensic and autopsy reports.

"(There is little) suspicion he was robbed because the victim's belongings are still there. There is an iPhone, Australian dollars and a watch," Denpasar District Police Chief Colonel Hadi Purnomo said.

Around 10 beer bottles have been found at the scene, while Mr Richardson appears to have suffered several wounds, including to the back of the head.

"It could be the victim was fighting back. Maybe at the crime scene, we will find the blood of a perpetrator," Col Purnomo added.

"The blood on the porch is being checked to see whether it's the victim's or if it is a perpetrator's."

"There are weird things (about the case). The main gate was locked from the outside while the garage door was locked from the inside."

Other items from the villa have been collected, including a bed sheet, glass and a kitchen knife - but police believe at this stage that the knife may have nothing to do with what happened.

Mr Richardson had last been seen by a friend drinking at a Sanur bar on Saturday night.

Police believe there is a possibility he died due to being intoxicated, falling and injuring himself.

Mr Richardson's family released a statement through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) on Tuesday saying that until the Indonesian Police have concluded their investigation, they did not wish to comment.

"We are greatly saddened by this event and ask the media to please respect our privacy and allow us to grieve in private."

DFAT is providing the family with consular assistance.
