Bangladeshi authorities have ordered mobile apps Viber and Tango disabled after a request by law enforcement agencies, citing security concerns.
The voice and messaging services were reportedly used by vandals earlier this month to co-ordinate criminal activity without being traced by police.
The services will remain suspended for a limited time, Sarwar Alam, an official at Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, told reporters.
The move comes after more than 20 people were killed in days of violence following the call by Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief Khaleda Zia for a country-wide transport blockade.
Zia, who has been seeking a fresh election under a non-party caretaker administration, called the action after she was prevented from joining a rally on the first anniversary of a disputed election she had boycotted on January 5, 2014.
