Bank says health will create SA jobs

BankSA says the health sector is well placed to drive jobs growth in South Australia as jobs in manufacturing disappear.

South Australia's health services sector has been identified as best placed to drive jobs growth.

As employment in manufacturing continues to slide and concerns grow over the future of the construction sector, the latest BankSA Trends report says health has the potential to fill the gaps.

The health sector is already the state's largest employer and will get even bigger in the future.

"Australia's living standards are growing and our population is ageing, meaning that both the quality and the cost of health care are rising faster than costs on average in the economy," the report said.

"That suggests health will become an even bigger business in the future than it is today."

BankSA said the scope of the sector was largely hidden and extended from personal trainers through to the producers of alternative medicines or medical equipment.

It said opportunities for growth would also be strong in the area of preventative health and e-health technologies.

But BankSA chief executive Nick Reade said businesses must act to take full advantage of the growth, universities should be armed with adequate research budgets and the rising cost of health care must be addressed to ensure long-term affordability for families.
