Barbados to host sporting extravaganza

Brian Lara, Dwight Yorke and Yohan Blake will join the West Indian cricket team to raise money for Dominica after a storm killed at least 31 people.

Kensington Oval will hold a sporting extravaganza in the form of a celebrity cricket match on Saturday, September 26th, to help raise funds for recovery efforts in Dominica, where Tropical Storm Erika left at least 31 people dead.

Each team will comprise six West Indies cricketers and five regional celebrities, the Caribbean Community said in a statement on Thursday.

Retired West Indies cricketer Brian Lara of Trinidad and Tobago, Tobago-born former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke and Jamaican Olympian Yohan Blake were among the first celebrities to confirm they would participate in the match.

Authorities in Dominica estimate the damage from Erika at upwards of $US200 million ($A278.88 million). The storm left more than 370 homes destroyed or badly damaged.
