Barcelona's new 44-year-old coach Luis Enrique has undergone emergency surgery for acute appendicitis, the club says.

"The surgery was carried out satisfactorily and he will be discharged in the next few days," Barcelona said in a statement on Monday

Acute appendicitis is a common but potentially life-threatening medical condition in which the appendix becomes inflamed and may be at risk of rupturing.

Surgery involves removing the organ.

Enrique took over as coach on May 19 to replace Gerardo Martino after their first trophyless season in six years.
