Constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders looks likely to occur within the next two years, but what are the barriers that remain?

Constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders looks likely to occur within the next two years, with both Labor and the coalition committing to calling a referendum on the issue.

 

Bipartisan support for a referendum was achieved last year, but it was delayed, the government says, due to lack of public awareness.

 

Thea Cowie spoke to University of Sydney Professor of Constitutional Law Anne Twomey about some of the remaining barriers to recognising first Australians in the Constitution.
