Geelong AFL coach Chris Scott admitted on Tuesday he had concerns about key players' carryover points after Jimmy Bartel was ruled out for one match.
Bartel will miss Saturday night's round 18 clash with St Kilda at Simonds Stadium after accepting a one-match suspension.
The Brownlow Medallist risked being sidelined for two matches if he challenged a charge of making forceful front-on contact against Adelaide youngster Rory Laird.
By submitting the early guilty plea, Bartel will only miss one game, although he will also have 87.5 carryover points added to his record.
Port Adelaide defender Tom Jonas has been banned for three matches after pleading guilty to engaging in rough conduct against St Kilda's Dylan Roberton.
Roberton was subbed out of last Saturday night's match with concussion suffered in the incident which was graded as reckless, high impact and high contact by the match review panel.
Geelong key forward James Podsiadly and Gold Coast's Steven May both accepted reprimands and 93.75 carryover points for engaging in rough conduct in incidents from round 17.
Premiership stars Steve Johnson, James Kelly and Joel Corey are also under threat of suspension during the finals series in September for the third-placed Cats for even a minor offence as they also have carryover points.
"We haven't got our head in the sand," Scott said on Tuesday.
"The numbers don't lie. The match review panel incidents over the past couple of months are alarming and it's something that we need to address.
"Arguably the most concerning thing is that we have players with carry-over points.
"We have a few players that need to be even more careful than some others."
